Augmentin is prescribed for the treatment of bacterial infections affecting the lower respiratory tract, otitis media, sinusitis, skin infections, and urinary tract infections.
As a broad-spectrum antibiotic, Augmentin works to eliminate bacteria. It targets various aerobic (bacteria that thrive in oxygen-rich environments) and anaerobic (bacteria that thrive in oxygen-free environments) gram-positive and aerobic gram-negative microorganisms, including those that produce beta-lactamase (an enzyme that breaks down penicillin). The inclusion of clavulanate potassium in this medication helps Augmentin resist the effects of bacterial beta-lactamases. This antibiotic is used for treating pneumonia and other infections of the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems, the urogenital tract, post-surgical infections, and more.
Do not use this medication if you are allergic to any penicillin antibiotic, if you have liver or kidney failure, or if you have mononucleosis. Additionally, avoid use if you have sensitivities to any components of this medication or other penicillin antibiotics, a history of liver issues, or jaundice resulting from Augmentin.
Potential side effects include dyspepsia, abdominal discomfort, bloating, gas, nausea, vomiting, liver function abnormalities, hepatitis, bile stagnation leading to jaundice, vaginal itching, and allergy symptoms (such as hives, rash, and swelling). Patients with liver failure should be particularly cautious. This medication is not recommended for pregnant women (especially during the third trimester) and those who are breastfeeding.
Treatment with Augmentin and other antibiotics can disrupt the normal bacterial flora of the colon and may encourage the overgrowth of C. difficile, a bacterium responsible for pseudomembranous colitis. Probenecid, used for gout treatment, may hinder the excretion of Augmentin by the kidneys, which could enhance its toxicity.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearing the time for your next scheduled dose. In that case, skip the missed dose. Do not double up on doses to make up for a missed one.
If you suspect you have taken too much Augmentin and experience symptoms like nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, skin rash, drowsiness, or hyperactivity, seek immediate medical attention.
